DALLAS, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local university spent the day putting on an annual fundraiser to help children battling cancer.

This year, the cause hits close to home as they’re now rallying for one of their own.

A student-run committee at Misericordia University held a fundraiser for someone special when they found out they were going through a tough time.

For The Kids (FTK) is an organization that hosts events to raise money for kids battling cancer.

But when one of their own committee members was diagnosed with cancer, they felt it was only right they do what they’ve done for others, for Madeline Gross.

“It honestly feels pretty surreal in a way like to see the support for her yeah, in some aspects I do really really really miss her, and like you know it hurts my heart like I get a little emotional but yeah it feels so surreal like just to see everybody support,” said volunteer Taylor Warring.

Everyone here came out to support a great cause all while having a good time.

“It really, really makes me happy that you know again as a campus. We are very like tighten it and you know one of our like Maddie was so involved on campus so you know one of our players is down so we are here to support her,” Warning explained.

The founder and president of FTK started this committee when he was a sophomore at Misericordia University.

Maddie is a good friend of his who worked by his side to make the committee what it is today.

“Maddie’s and she’s such a fighter. She’s such a strong person. I think it means a lot to her even outside is this organization like the dance team who’s here they put a dance on for her that we’re doing every hour on the hour,” said FTK Committee Founder and President Nicholas Wilde.

Maddie is also an inspiration to everyone because regardless of what she is going through, she still wants to help.

“The fact that she is actually going through chemo and still wants to put a video together doe us and do our flyers and reach out and help anyway she can it’s incredible. It feels good to know that we’re giving back to someone who’s gonna come back in full swing,” Wilde added.
