TEXAS TOWNSHIP, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Lackawanna County man has been sentenced after causing a crash that killed one person in July of 2021.

Back in March, James Gerrity, 62, from Dunmore, was convicted for crossing over a median and hitting Mary and Lou Radell on State Route 6.

Officials said Mr. and Mrs. Radell suffered serious injuries from the accident, however, Mr. Radell succumbed to his injuries while being operated on at the hospital.

During the conviction District Attorney A.G. Howell stated “This fatal crash could have been avoided if Mr. Gerrity did not make the reckless choice to unsuccessfully try to treat his low blood sugar while driving. If he had pulled over and ate his cookies while stopped then Mary Radell would not have been seriously injured and Lou Radell would not have been killed. We all have an obligation to keep our roads as safe as possible by staying alert to our surroundings, our vehicles, and ourselves.”

Gerrity was sentenced to 12 months to 48 months in Wayne County Correctional Facility on one count of homicide by vehicle, one count of aggravated assault by vehicle, and one count of involuntary manslaughter.
