SUNBURY — If all goes as planned, construction on a new McDonald’s in Sunbury’s North Fourth Street Plaza will begin at the end of May.

City council revealed in July that McDonald’s USA LLC of Chicago was finalizing plans to build a new structure at 2181 N. 4th St., inside the plaza.

The bulk of the project will be located in Sunbury, with a small portion extended into Upper Augusta Township, according to code department officer Michael Rhoads, who is in charge of the project for the city.

Developers are working with both municipalities.

Rhoads said construction is slated to begin in late May with the fast-food restaurant slated to be up and running within 90 days of the start of the project.

re excited and we will work with them for whatever they need like any other new business coming to the city,” Rhoads said.

Councilman Jim Eister said the plans had been in the works for more than a year. City council and Mayor Josh Brosious have given multiple 60-day extensions to the company for the proposed project, Eister said.

Brosious said he is excited for McDonald’s to come to the city.

“We are all looking forward to McDonald’s being part of our community,” he said. “It’s great to see they wanted to come here and be part of Sunbury and it shows people are investing in our city.”
