WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A gruesome discovery was made along the Susquehanna River Sunday.
A body was found at the riverbank. A lot of people were out walking in the area Sunday as police were just down the hill investigating the discovery of a body.
Shocking…I can't believe it," Jason Hyde of Luzerne said.
River Commons was busy with people walking and running Sunday, taking advantage of the sunshine, and the scenic view of the Susquehanna River. Just before noon someone called 911. A body was floating in the river.
Wilkes Barre Police responded to the scene. The body was in the river bank near the Market Street Bridge. Police confirmed the deceased was an elderly man.
The crime scene at a busy park in the middle of the day, drew concern from people out for a Sunday stroll.
"It's very sad and upsetting. Just a lot of questions, you're not sure what happened," Amber Watts of Wilkes-Barre said.
"A lot of questions jump up inside my head. Obviously it's been a weird, rough year. This kind of adds to the feeling that I had in 2020 and it's just sad," Wilkes University Mens Soccer Coach Michael Piranian said.
Without knowing who he is or how he died, people walking by say they couldn't help but think of the man's family.
"My heart goes out to his family, whoever they may be," Hyde said.
No further information on the cause of his death has been discovered at this time. Eyewitness News will have more information as the investigation continues.
