Santa Claus makes stop in Wilkes-Barre to encourage car safety

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Santa Claus was at the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department earlier Wednesday to encourage car seat safety for the little ones.

The event, organized by the NEPA CPS Taskforce, brought in Santa to hand out goodie bags to kids and, more importantly, check car seats to ensure kids' safety ahead of holiday travel.

"65% of all car seats are actually not installed properly. So we just, we want to just make sure, especially for the holiday season now, that every car seat that's in a car traveling for the holidays is installed the right way, and that's why we have the certified technicians here to do that," Wilkes Barre City Fire Department Firefighter and EMT Derek Zalenski said.

How much snow will Pennsylvania see Thursday into Friday?

"I want to make sure that my son is properly secured in the car in case there's an accident, god forbid," said Wilkes-Barre resident Jennifer Dobitas.

This is the fourth year the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department has held the event helping families install infant car seats and booster seats properly.
