HONESDALE, WAYNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Wayne County man is now awaiting trial for assaulting an inmate after he was sentenced for a car crash that revealed 97 grams of cocaine in his possession.
According to a press release, on January 31 around 5:50 a.m. Pennsylvania State Police responded to a single-car crash in Waymart Borough.
As stated in the press release Joan Mejiamarte was the only person in the car that contained a large zip lock bag with white powder and a digital scale.
Hit and run victim left for dead wants answers
Investigators say the white powder was determined to be 97.9 grams of cocaine, and Mejiamarte was revealed to have tested positive for cocaine, fentanyl, and cannabinoids.
On August 19 while in jail pending deposition for the cocaine, Mejiamarte hit another inmate with breakfast trays.
On November 8 Mejiamarte pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver cocaine, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, and simple assault.
Mejiamarte was sentenced to 47 months to 8 years in prison.
