Road crews bracing for snow in and around Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The region is seeing its first snowfall of the season and that could mean hazardous driving conditions. 28/22 News has crews out and about monitoring weather and road conditions.

Reporter Andy Mehalshick and videographer Paul Davis were on the move in the Hazleton area Thursday afternoon.

How much snow will Pennsylvania see Friday?

They showed us the view from a camera on top of our live truck around noon and so far, the roads were just wet.

The Hazleton area is known to receive higher amounts of snow because of its elevation of nearly 1,900 feet.

They stopped by Hazleton Public Works where the plow trucks and spreaders were being prepared for the snow.

A snow parking ban will also take effect at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

28/22 News spoke with the Hazleton DPW Supervisor Frank Vito. He says they are ready to go.

28/22 News Reporter Andy Mehalshick can tell you from growing up in Hazleton that people in those parts know all too well what could happen: Snow, and lots of it.

Residents like Bob Yevak are ready for whatever nature throws their way.

"It's the first snowstorm, I still get nervous. What do I need? What do we do? I was all over the place this morning. They're emptying grocery stores out. Bread and milk. It's just a fact of life in Hazleton, you know. Even though we probably only going to get little dusting and rain, people are motivated to do their thing with the first snowfall," said Hazleton resident Bob Yevak.

So what should you do if you are driving and your vehicle starts to slide? Mehalshick spoke with Butler Township Police Chief Bill Feissner.

"The best thing I would say to do is try to control your car. Slow down take your foot off the pedal but don't slam on the brakes because that's going yo cause you to slide more," Chief Feissner explained.
