Snow storm impacts throughout NEPA

DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The snowstorm certainly made its mark on NEPA power outages, road closures, and some nasty traffic backups.

Those power outages and road closures are still in effect in some spots.

But interstates across our area are now back open after being shut down for several hours.

Traffic continues to move smoothly here on Interstate 81 northbound. For hours this afternoon, it was at a massive standstill and backed up for several miles.

It was standstill bumper-to-bumper traffic on 81 northbound near the Drinker Street exit in Dunmore Friday afternoon.

Roads closures, restrictions across PA due to snow impact

The backup lasted hours as a result of Interstate 84, Interstate 380, and the Casey Highway shutting down for several hours.

On the other side of the borough along the O'Neill Highway, crews were cutting down trees that brought down power lines.

McDonald's and several businesses along the highway were without power and multiple traffic signals nearby were without power. Dunmore was one of several communities hit hard.

Earlier in the morning, Mountain Top in Luzerne County experienced roadways covered in snow, especially along Route 309.

Parts of the Poconos received more than a foot of snow. In Hamlin, there were downed tree limbs, power lines, and closed intersections.

"I actually have no power at my house and I needed my morning coffee this morning," said Holly Dileo from Newfoundland.

The storm may have been an inconvenience for many but crews were out early and it made a difference.

"They handle the mountain great. I go back and forth to work every day in Kingston and there's never a problem. And it brings some fun activities for the winter so I'm happy to let it snow!" Michelle Gazey from Mountain Top.
