La Festa Italiana brings taste of Italy to Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — You don’t need to be Italian to have fun at an annual festival making its way back to the Electric City this weekend.

28/22 News spoke to organizers behind La Festa Italiana about how it reflects on heritage while bringing everyone together.

The Lackawanna County Courthouse is sporting new colors this week as red, white, and green make up the Italian flag hanging in the square.

That only means one thing, La Festa Italiana is back.

Man arrested after standoff in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man was arrested after officers say he threatened a woman with a crossbow, leading to a standoff with Scranton police.

According to the Scranton Police Department, officers were called to Watson Street Wednesday night for a woman requesting a PFA (Protection From Abuse) order.

Police said they learned a man, identified as David Smith, 41, was at the house and threatening the woman with a crossbow.

PD: Man hides in brush to avoid arrest in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say they arrested a man after he was found in a stolen car, made shooting threats, and hid in a brush to avoid arrest.

According to the Scranton Police Department, on Wednesday officers were called about a man driving near a house on Myrtle Street and claimed he intended to "shoot up the residence."

Through further investigation, officers said they identified the man as Steven Brannigan, 33, and he was driving a stolen car out of Wilkes-Barre.

Carverton Road set to close for pipe replacement

KINGSTON TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — PennDOT announced that a road in Luzerne County will be closed for an emergency pipe replacement.

According to the PennDOT, Route 1036 (Carverton Road) between McDermott Lane and 8th Street in Kingston Township will be closed for an emergency pipe replacement.

Officials say the work will begin September 3 and the road is expected to reopen around the third week of September.

Body of NJ man recovered after drowning in Delaware Water Gap

BUSHKILL, PIKE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials say a New Jersey man died after drowning in the Delaware Water Gap Monday afternoon.

According to the National Park Service, around 1:45 p.m. Monday, rangers and dive team members from the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area were called for a drowning at Bushkill Access.

At 3:00 p.m. crews say they recovered the body of a 39-year-old man from Lakewood, New Jersey about 20-30 feet from the shore in around 7 feet of water.

W. CHILLISQUAQUE TWP., NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say a man was killed when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a home, ending up in the basement of the house in Northumberland County.

On Wednesday around 7:00 p.m., troopers were called to a report of a vehicle crashing into a house in the 4000 block of State Route 405 in West Chillisquaque Township.

Pennsylvania Senate Race: Bob Casey holding lead over Dave McCormick

(WHTM) - U.S. Senator Bob Casey continues to lead Republican challenger Dave McCormick in the latest Emerson College Polling/The Hill poll.

In a survey of 950 likely Pennsylvania voters, Casey led McCormick 48% to 44% with 8% undecided with nearly two months until Election Day.

The race is unchanged from July's poll after Casey’s lead on McCormick dipped slightly from his 6% lead in Emerson College Polling/The Hill’s June survey.
