Concerns raised in Avoca during emergency meeting over waste transfer station

AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Concern and frustration from residents in Avoca Borough Wednesday night during an emergency meeting over a proposed waste transfer station.

They're worried that the project will mean more noise and pollution in their neighborhood and have local history to prove their point.

It was standing room only at the Queen of the Apostles Parish Hall in Avoca Wednesday night.

More than a hundred residents say they do not want a solid waste station in the community.

"Nothing, no protections nothing," an Avoca resident said.

Vehicle into structure closes down Route 405 in Northumberland County

WEST CHILLISQUAQUE TOWNSHIP, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Route 405 is closed down in both directions after a vehicle crashed into a structure Wednesday evening.

According to a Pennsylvania State Police release, crews were called to the 4000 block of State Route 405 for a vehicle crash into an occupied structure just after 7:00 p.m.

Officials say State Route 405 is currently shutdown in both directions between State Route 45 and Housels Run Road to conduct an investigation.

Annual Wyoming County Fair kicks off in Meshoppen Township

MESHOPPEN TOWNSHIP, WYOMING COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Annual Wyoming County Fair kicked off Wednesday in Meshoppen Township, bringing a week full of excitement and activities for the whole family.

The fair offers a wide range of events, including a concert on Saturday night featuring country artist Ian Munsick.

"It is great to watch this go from just a patch of growing grass to all these vendors with tents and rides. It's wonderful," said Wyoming County Fair Board of Directors Ashley Burke.

Election officials in Lackawanna County focus on voter integrity

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Voter integrity is at the top of mind for election officials across the Commonwealth.

For the third year in a row, Lackawanna County has applied for and received a state-issued election integrity grant.

Lackawanna County Commissioners approved the grant application Wednesday.

This year, it was awarded more than $752,000.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued in Luzerne County Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday evening shortly after 6:00 p.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) announced a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Central Luzerne County in NEPA until 6:45 p.m.

The warning was issued after a thunderstorm was spotted by radar near Muhlenberg, or nine miles west of Wilkes-Barre, moving at 25 miles per hour, according to the NWS.

Valley residents asked to fill out transportation survey

LEWISBURG — Officials at SEDA-Council of Governments in Lewisburg are asking residents to take a survey about transportation improvement needs in the community.The 2050 Long-Range Transportation plan examines future transportation needs over a 25-year planning horizon for the SEDA-COG Metropolitan Planning Organization region.
