As I have been listening to the tributes to Pope Francis and reading the expectations for the yet-to-be appointed new pope, I have been reflecting on the explicit and implicit role of spiritual leaders. The role of the Pope, as well as the role of religious leaders in all Christian and Jewish denominations, is influenced by how the Torah, especially in the book of Leviticus, prescribes the behaviors, actions, rights, and obligations of the Cohanim, the High Priests, the first of whom was Aaron.
