SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — In Shanksville, the Flight 93 National Memorial honored the 40 passengers and crew members who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, for the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, a ceremony at the memorial began at 9:45 a.m. with the reading of the names and a moment of silence.
On Sept. 11, 2001, the four coordinated terrorist attacks shocked the world. That morning at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. hijackers flew two planes into each of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center in New York. At 9:27 a.m. a third plane struck the Pentagon in Virginia.

The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville at 10:03 a.m. as the 40 passengers and crew members revolted.
On that day, 2,977 people were killed and thousands were injured making it the deadliest terrorist attack in the world.
For the 23rd anniversary, President Biden and Vice President Harris traveled to Ground Zero in New York before making their way to the Flight 93 National Memorial. They ended their day at the Pentagon.
Former President Donald Trump also visited the 9/11 memorial and a New York fire station before he traveled to Shanksville to pay his respects.
If you attended the ceremony in Shanksville, you were be able to see the Flight 93 Flag. It was designed by Pennsylvania Government Reformer and activist Gene Stilp just days after the attack and it has flown over the crash site every September 10th and 11th since.
