UPDATE: The Associated Press has projected Dave McCormick will win, however, the Casey campaign noted there are thousands of ballots left to count.
(WHTM) - U.S. Senator Bob Casey's campaign said Thursday morning they remain optimistic Casey will win re-election with votes still being counted across Pennsylvania.
Maddy McDaniel, a spokesperson for Casey's campaign, released a statement reiterating they believe Casey "will be re-elected" in his bid against Republican former hedge fund CEO Dave McCormick.
On Wednesday McCormick's spokesperson Elizabeth Gregory posted on social media "these provisional ballots will NOT be the deciding factor. There are 45,000+ ballots in ruby red Cambria County that still need to be counted. @DaveMcCormickPA has won this election."
The Pennsylvania Department of State says provisional ballot counting would begin on Thursday and they "expect there to be tens of thousands of these additional ballots included in the Commonwealth's overall count."
What is a provisional ballot?
In addition, military and overseas ballots must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, to be counted.
Casey, a three-term incumbent, won his last re-election bid in 2018 by 13 points and is the longest-serving Democratic U.S. Senator in Pennsylvania history. If he were to overtake McCormick, Casey would be the only Democrat to win statewide in Pennsylvania in November's election.
Republicans are projected to have won the U.S. Senate after picking up three seats in West Virginia, Ohio, and Montana.
