Pennsylvania seeks to cut costs through reviewing goverment owned buildings

(WHTM)-- Pennsylvania officials could conduct the first-ever review of every space owned or leased by the Commonwealth as part of an effort to eliminate costs.

During Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal on Tuesday, Feb. 4, he said the Secretary of the Department of General Services would conduct comprehensive reviews of every space the commonwealth owns or leases.

Shapiro said this comes as a response to changes in the way the state government works, highlighting the need for more technology, hoteling space, and areas for collaboration.

But Shapiro said this won't only make life easier for government officials.

"By using the buildings we own as effectively as possible and reducing our reliance on external parking and office leases – we're going to save the Commonwealth tens of millions of dollars over the next several years," Shapiro said.

The costs eliminated from the move would be allocated to funding for the future — particularly schools, according to Shapiro.
