FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) -- Two Pennsylvania State Troopers are hospitalized after being shot Wednesday in Antrim Township, Franklin County.
Troopers were responding to a call after 6 p.m. on Wednesday for retail theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Guilford Township when three suspects fled the scene toward Interstate 81, Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement. Troopers located the vehicle, and a pursuit ensued.
After deploying spike strips, Troopers stopped the vehicle going southbound on I-81 at exit 3, when two female suspects exited the vehicle and complied with the Trooper's commands. However, State Police said a male suspect started shooting at the Troopers, hitting two of them.
Troopers returned fire, killing the male suspect. State Police identified the man as Lamar Lorenzo Foy, and the coroner responded to the scene. The two female suspects are facing theft charges.
Both Troopers were flown to WellSpan York Hospital, where they are in critical and serious condition. On Thursday, one trooper was released from the hospital, and another remained in serious condition. Their identities have also not been released at this time.
Three people, including two Pennsylvania State Troopers, were shot Wednesday evening in Franklin County.
The incident shut down roads at exit 3 on I-81 in Antrim Township, a PennDOT official said. A 511camera showed numerous first responders blocking off the area right by a Sheetz, and at least one helicopter landed on the exit ramp.
Gov. Josh Shapiro said he and his wife are praying for the State Troopers, and asked others to join him.
"Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are the very best of us — running towards danger every day to keep our communities safe," Shapiro said in a social media post.
In a statement, Stephen Polishan, the Pennsylvania State Troopers Association President, asked the public to pray for the troopers and their family.
"Each day, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police go to work prepared to give their last full measure," Polishan said. "We can never thank them enough for their incredible bravery."
Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge President Joseph Regan also issued a statement saying the PA FOP "stands united in support of the injured Troopers, their families and all who serve with honor.”
Franklin County Commissioners issued a statement regarding the incident, sending thoughts and prayers to the involved officers.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the incident in Antrim Township Wednesday evening. We are eternally grateful for the men and women who put their lives on the line each and every day to serve and protect our communities. Our hearts go out to the troopers and their families, the Pennsylvania State Police and everyone impacted by this incident.”
