Multiple structures damaged in Norwegian Township fire

NORWEGIAN TOWNSHIP, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — Charred homes, a dramatic rescue, beloved pets gone. And state police say it all could have been prevented.

Crews spent hours fighting a massive fire in Schuylkill County Wednesday afternoon that law enforcement says was no accident. And it could have turned deadly if it weren't for a neighbor stepping in to help.

One dead after being struck by train in Schuylkill County

BARNESVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One woman is dead after being hit by a train in Schuylkill County.

According to the Schuylkill County Coroner's Office, the office was called out to a railroad near Route 54 and Tuscarora Mountain Drive in Barnesville, Schuylkill County for a report of a person hit by a train just before 7 a.m. Thursday.

The coroner's office identified the victim as 39-year-old Melissa Merenda of Barnesville. A virtual autopsy is scheduled for Thursday night. The investigation is ongoing.

Meuser, Wegman facing off in 9th Congressional District race

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) — Several key congressional races are being decided by voters, including Pennsylvania's 12th and 9th Congressional Districts.

A busy day here in Schuylkill County.

We spoke with both Rep. Meuser (R) and Dr. Wegman (D) about the race today, here’s what they had to say.

“We’ve got a lot of enthusiasm, I think that the voter turnout for Republicans is going to be extraordinary,” said Meuser.

“What I’m really happy about is the fact that everybody wants to vote, OK everybody wants to vote,” said Wegman.

Tim Twardzik tests positive for COVID-19

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Days before the election, a local candidate has said he tested positive for coronavirus.

Republican state representative candidate in the 123rd district, Tim Twardzik of Schuylkill County, posted to his official Facebook page he had tested positive for COVID-19 Saturday.

As precaution, all campaign appearances before Election Day have been canceled. Twardzik is running to claim the seat currently held by Democrat Neal Goodman, who is not seeking re-election.

Election bureau says it's keeping up with mail-in ballots in Schuylkill County

POTTSVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — With the election one week away, there's a lot of concern about getting your ballot in on time.

But officials with the election bureau in Schuylkill County say residents can rest easy. Every day people dart to the Schuylkill County Election Bureau to drop off their ballots.

"This election is probably the most important in my lifetime. There's so much riding on the line," Helen Sluzis of Maria said.

Even though it's the first year the state is accepting mail-in ballots, the Schuylkill County Election Bureau is keeping up.
