In the mid-1990s, my then-husband passed away from complications of HIV/AIDS. From the time he was diagnosed until he died, all of us, friends and family, but most of all, him, knew how it would end. There was no cure or effective management for HIV/AIDS then. Early on, a specific population of humans was the known segment of society contracting the disease: Gay men and IV drug users. Few people cared if they suffered and died. Good riddance was the attitude — the more the better.
