Downtown Ice Festival kicked off in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — 28/22 News is live at the Scranton Ice Festival.

The 2024 "Downtown Ice Festival" is kicking off in Scranton.

"Our big strategy was really activated every section of downtown, so there's, of course, tons of sculptures to see but all of the businesses are hosting activities that are circus themed, there's going to be entertainment strolling you'll see a juggler walk past you down the street, so it really is throughout the entire downtown business district and everyone is really excited," added Liz Baldi business development director.

Two walk-in crisis centers coming to Luzerne County

The two-day event started at 5:30 p.m., while the ice sculptures were just getting rolled out, local businesses throughout downtown were open and ready to get into the circus mood.

Some businesses like Northern Lights Espresso Bar had their windows painted in the circus theme, while others like Backyard Alehouse started off the night with a hot chocolate and drink bar outside of their restaurant.

Once all of the sculptures are displayed, about 55 of them, each one will have a unique QR code that you can scan which enters you into a pool to win some prizes.

One of the ice sculptures is interactive, just head over to the Marketplace at Steamtown and you and some friends can take some pictures with your heads inside in the ice!

The sculptures will be displayed throughout downtown Scranton, not just on the square but neighboring streets as well.

Businesses on Penn Avenue are getting together to create their little scavenger hunt

"If you visit all of these eight places on our block, and here are five other ones that are participating and get a punch from everywhere, you bring it back to our store by 5 o'clock tomorrow and you will have a chance to win all these great prizes from all of our businesses, which is great it just adds to the day" explained Kara Schermerhorn from Penn House Boutique.

The ice sculptures are not the only event taking place in Downtown Scranton.

Downtown on Ice will end Friday at 9:00 p.m. and start back up on Saturday.
