Plans for new Scranton schoolyard unveiled

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Plans for a brand new schoolyard at a Scranton elementary school were unveiled Thursday morning.

Students at Whittier Elementary School cheered when they saw the design that would bring some greenery to its asphalt schoolyard.

The district partnered with the Trust for Public Land and Valley in Motion groups to kick-start the project last fall.

The kids even got their say in the plans asking for a playground, benches, and flowers. Both students and staff said they can't wait to see the final product.

"A space like this for them just to be kids, in a safe environment, means everything to me as an administrator and to the teachers and staff here at Whittier," said Andrea Musto, principal of Whittier Elementary School.

"I wanted, like, a playground so like me and all my friends could play around and have fun," added Rocco Baresse, a second grader at Whittier Elementary School.

The schoolyard is one of three planned in south Scranton.
