Luzerne County's exotic bird rescue expands

NANTICOKE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local girl's dream continues to soar; her exotic bird rescue has moved to a new location in order to help even more winged animals.

Evlyn's Exotic Bird Rescue and Adoption is ready to rescue more birds in their new space.

They said they needed to expand when they realized just how many birds in the area needed to be rescued.

12-year-old Evlyn Lyons was just six years old when she decided she was born to save birds and now, her dream is growing.

"One thing led to another quickly that we didn't expect and we had to deal with getting our own licenses and trying to find a larger spot because there are just so many birds in need," said Linda Uren the president of Evlyn Exotic Bird Rescue & Adoption.

Paul’s Law takes steps toward being signed into legislation

Evlyn's Exotic Bird Rescue and Adoption began at her home just fostering a few birds.

The rescue has now spread its wings and moved to a new location, needing to expand as Evlyn and her team get more and more birds that need help.

"Not all birds are like the birds you see in videos. they're not all nice. they're hard to take care of and they bite," says Lyons.

Throughout the years, the rescue has gained the help of many different groups including NEPA Bikers For Justice who regularly make their way to Evlyn's and give their support.

"We've followed Evlyn's stories since the beginning. Actually, it's wonderful to see how this succeeded, they have a new place, lots of space, and they're going to do very well," stated Jake Ohaion the president of NEPA Bikers For Justice.

The larger area will give the birds a better life through more hands-on care and a space to live freely.

"The birds will be able to be birds, they'll be able to fly around free flight. Somebody's here during the day, all day taking care of their needs. A lot of vet care," added Uren.

Not only will the new spot provide more space to help more birds, but will also have room for educational opportunities for those who want to learn more.

"We're gonna have like an educational area where they can come in and learn. this is what a bird really is, this is what it takes to take care of them. you know, not what you see in the videos; the reality of it," continued Uren.

Those at the rescue told 28/22 News they plan to work with other animal rescues all across the area and help each other continue to save our wild animals.
