Three dead in early-morning Bradford County crash

ATHENS TWP, Pa. (WETM) — Three people are dead in Bradford County after a single-car crash in Athens Township blocked traffic for much of the morning.

According to the Athens Township Police Department, three people died in a crash when their car was going south on Riverside Drive along the Susquehanna River around 2:39 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, when it lost control and struck two parked trucks.

Police say the car was moving quickly when it lost control and went into the parked vehicle.

Based on witness testimony and photos, a silver sedan hit a Ford utility pickup truck, damaging the front and knocking another white pickup truck parked behind it down an embankment near the river.

The owners of the trucks told 18 News that they heard the crash happen and walked outside to see their vehicles mangled and the sedan on its side.

When speaking to neighbors and other bystanders, they claimed that a large dip in the roadway made the vehicle lose control.

The dip was shortly up the road from the crash site with the sunken road visible from afar. While at the scene, cars were seen avoiding driving over the area of the road based on how bad it was.

Residents said the road has been an issue for several years, even saying they avoid it when coming home.

One resident told 18 News she thinks people go too fast on Riverside Drive, and when mixing speed and the damaged road in the dark it would make sense if that's what caused the crash.

Residents said that cones were put up on Tuesday to make drivers aware that the road is damaged, along with placing a flashing light on a sign reading "BUMP" to add more warning.

The names of the individuals have not been released yet, with police saying they will be available when the families of the victims are contacted.

The crash investigation is ongoing, and 18 News will update this story when more information becomes available.
