Two proud Irishmen from Scranton have passed away

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Two men from Scranton, proud of their Irish heritage, have sadly passed away.

The Scranton Saint Patrick Parade Committee tells 28/22 News that Thomas J. Cawley, 78, passed away on Sunday, April 21. He was born and raised in Scranton and resided in Pittston Township. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean Cawley, and their children and grandchildren.

Cawley was proud of his Irish heritage, as he was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Lackawanna County St. Patrick's Parade Day Committee, which he honorably served as President in 2008.

Viewing hours will be held on Friday, April 26 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Graziano Funeral Home, 700 S. Township Boulevard in Pittston, Luzerne County.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 27 at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, in Pittston, and interment services with military honors will immediately follow in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, located in Pittston.

The Scranton Saint Patrick Parade Committee also informed 28/22 News of the loss of another proud Irishman, and a fierce fireman, Frank "Burkey" Burke III, 73, of Scranton, who died on Friday, April 19.

Father of the late Frankie Burke IV, who was a member of the Scranton Saint Patrick Parade Committee and like his son Frank was also very proud of his Irish heritage. Frank was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Irish Cultural Society.

Burke is survived by his wife Mary Alice Burke and their children.

A viewing for Burke was held on Tuesday, April 23 and a Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 24, at St. Ann's Basilica in Scranton.
