Construction on I-81 continues in Luzerne County

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Another morning and afternoon on I-81 South filled with traffic as construction continues.

The reason for the high volume of traffic on I-81 during the morning & afternoon commute is because of lane restrictions for shoulder cutting.

What's being shown now is footage from earlier in the afternoon that started bubbling up near the Avoca airport.

Mainly stop-and-go traffic on Wednesday and the same will be expected for Thursday's commute as PennDOT says the I-81 southbound shoulder cutting and lane restrictions will continue from 9:00 a.m. To 3:00 p.m. From exit 180, which is the Moosic exit, to exit 165, which is the Mountaintop and Wilkes-Barre exit.

Lane restrictions on I-81 North and South

Although Thursday is the last day for the shoulder cutting, it means another heavy traffic day for drivers.

"It's terrible, it's terrible, I'm trying to get to someplace you know I'm running late to get there and it just sucks. It's very inconvenient especially when you are trying to get somewhere before they close," said Edward Kipiakasa, Hollywood, Montgomery County.

And, as a reminder, when you are approaching work zones, drivers are expected to slow down to the given speed limit, turn their headlights on if asked, and pay attention to flaggers and other construction workers to keep them & yourself safe.
