WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A locally owned grocery store is forced to close one of its two locations until further notice due to flooding from Thursday night's intense storm.
28/22 News Reporter Amelia Sack reports from Schiel's Family Market on Hanover Street in Wilkes-Barre with an update on clean up efforts.
This location will be closed until further notice, as staff continues the cleanup from Thursday night's storm.
The staff at Schiel's Family Market on Hanover street in Wilkes-Barre has a big clean-up on their hands.
Thursday night, intense rain flooded the store, giving them no choice but to close until further notice.
On Friday morning, customers who stop by to shop left empty handed.
"I just came here for some eggs. I didn't even expect it. It's crazy. We come here like often," said Monique Hickson from Hanover Township.
Many say they're taken back by the extent of the damage.
"I was surprised cause I just live a few blocks away. I know there was heavy rain for a short time but I didn't realize it was something that could do so much damage," stated Jim Spak of Hanover Township.
"It sucks but hey what are you gonna do? Got to go somewhere else," commented Gary Keller from Ashley.
28/22 News was on the scene when the flooding started Thursday night. Crews there told us the store had nearly 6 inches of water inside.
Employees, department of public works, and volunteers were helping to shovel and mop water for hours.
A vac system is being used to suck out debris and water. The flooding is taking a big hit on the small business.
"I feel bad for the owners and for the workers. They do a lot of good for the community and locally owned small business and it's sad to see what's happened," said Spak.
The store's George Avenue location nearby will remain open.
