WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local Labor Day weekend celebration puts the focus on what the holiday is all about. It took place Sunday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre.
Kirby Park was filled with live music, games, and free food all in honor of Labor Day weekend.
The third annual NEPA-que took place Sunday afternoon in Kirby Park. They had a chili cookoff, grilled burgers, hotdogs, and sweet treats.
"Both members of organized labor can come have a celebration, but also those that may not be a member of a labor union but just a member of the community can come have fun not worrying about having to pay for anything. That's why we have different sponsorships we get food donated, and we do a variety of things," said organizer Alisha Hoffman-Mirilovich.

They also had a raffle.
"We also do a basket raffle. It's the only thing that we provide that people could optionally pay for and it will benefit a scholarship fund as well as a strike fund as it does every year," said Hoffman-Mirilovich.
State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski was also among those who attended. He says this is something he looks forward to every year.
"I come out here every time they have our Labor Day celebration. It's a matter of NEPA demonstrating and honoring all those that built this country," Pashinski said.
He also says it's a great way to connect with people in the community.
"Very nice atmosphere to come meet people talk to various groups various union people that think of the world not just as a community but love our country and it's a good way to connect," Pashinski added.
