AVOCA, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — This summer’s record-breaking travel season is not over yet as Labor Day is expected to be the busiest ever for airports.
28/22 News stopped by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport to talk to travelers passing through for the holiday.
"It’s really quiet here," said Ken Sarnoski of Tucson, Arizona.
The quiet is a good sign for travelers flying out of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport on Labor Day.
"It was easy, it was nice. Travel was not too crazy, it was good," expressed Gary Sluder of Knoxville, Tennessee.
Around 17 million travelers are expected to fly to their destination around the holiday. Some on the clock and others for fun.
"I’m traveling for work," said Jamahl McAllister
"We go every year, that’s our mother-daughter trip every year we go somewhere so this time we picked Jamaica," explained Angie Rifenbery of Luzerne.
"This will be the first leaving on Labor Day so we’ll see, but we’re in no hurry. Once we get there, we get there," stated Tiffany Brzozowski of Courtdale.
TSA reports that air travel volumes this summer are the highest the agency has seen in its history marking an 8.5% increase from last year.
'On time' statuses gave a green light for all early morning flights leaving Luzerne County. However, delays and cancellations across the country are playing a domino effect on later arrivals.
"Hopefully we’ll move quickly today and hopefully, there’s not a lot of traffic so I get through the airport nice and smooth," added McAllister
Since Memorial Day weekend, TSA has already screened nearly 240 million people, that’s an average of 2.7 million per day.
More people could mean longer wait times - but travelers here tell me patience is key.
"Get here early and just have a good attitude. It’s Labor Day, you know, it’s going to be busy so just have a good attitude and have a good time," explained Sluder.
The TSA wants to remind all those traveling through the airport to check their flight status before heading to the airport and make sure all your bags follow security checkpoint guidelines.
