MAHANOY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An inmate serving a life sentence for murder was found dead in a cell at a Schuylkill County prison.
Superintendent Bernadette Mason of the State Correctional Institution at Mahanoy stated inmate Jason Roe, 44, was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday.
While prison and medical staff responded, life-saving measures were unsuccessful. Roe was pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m.
Pennsylvania State Police will conduct an investigation and the official cause of death will be determined by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office.
Officials say Roe was serving a life sentence for first-degree murder that occurred in Greene County. He has been at SCI Mahanoy since October 7, 2021.
