Lackawanna County asks for input on road safety

LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Lackawanna County is soliciting input from residents for its Safety Action Plan.

As part of the county's commitment to Vision Zero, a "national effort to eliminate traffic fatalities", a survey is now available to all county residents on the Safe Streets Lackawanna website. The survey asks for information on driving and pedestrian habits.

The county and its consultant, Bowman Consulting Group, will be holding in-person events throughout the county to find the root of the problem and have people propose solutions.

The survey comes in light of Lackawanna County crash data which states in a release that, out of the 11,761 crashes in Lackawanna County between 2019 and 2023, 45% resulted in reported injury including 87 fatalities and 312 serious injuries.

The county highlights incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists as a problem, saying in the release about 25% of all fatal crashes involve a pedestrian or bicyclist. The county also notes that The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also reported that pedestrian deaths have increased by 57% from 2013 to 2022.

Lackawanna County Department of Planning and Economic Development asked La Festa Italiana attendees to fill out the survey and encouraged other residents to fill out the survey here.
