Recall on Costco sold children's gardening set

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A children's gardening set has been recalled due to high levels of lead in the paint used.

On September 12, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Sets due to lead levels that exceed federal limits in the paint used on the hoe and rake.

These garden sets were exclusively sold at Costco online and in stores nationwide. Approximately 459,200 units were sold between February 2024 through June 2024 according to a release from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The release states that consumers should immediately stop using the rake and hoe in the garden set and have their child tested for lead exposure. Consumers may also visit Red Toolbox's recall website to obtain information on receiving a free replacement.

According to the release parents and caregivers can identify if the set they own is part of the recall by checking the white sticker on the bottom of the wheelbarrow labeled "Red Toolbox" and has a manufacturing date of December 2023.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is alerting parents and caregivers that lead is harmful when ingested by children and encourages them to reach out to their child's healthcare provider about getting a blood lead test.

For information about lead poisoning prevention, testing, follow-up, and local resources consumers can call the Pennsylvania Department of Health's toll-free number (1-800-440-LEAD).
