Stride for Life 5k walk/run kicked off in Kirby Park

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Dozens laced up their running shoes at Wilkes-Barre's Kirby Park to raise funds and deliver a powerful message.

Northeast counseling services held its inaugural Stride for life 5k walk/run for suicide prevention.

More than 70 people came out to participate in the event.

The event aims to raise awareness for suicide prevention and mental health issues and to shed the stigma surrounding both.

"It's a great cause. There's so much going on with depression and anxiety and I know, especially in the male community a lot of times there's bad stigma to reach out for help. You feel like you're alone, but you're never alone," said Ross Turetsku a runner.

Proceeds from the event will go to northeast counseling services to help them continue to provide mental health services in luzerne county and beyond.
