Controversey continues with Luzerne County drop boxes

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The ballot drop box controversy continues to be talked about in Luzerne County.

On Monday, County Manager Romilda Crocamo said she stands by her decision to not deploy the boxes in November. Crocamo says it's all about the safety, security, and integrity of the election.

"I certainly appreciate receiving letters from outside attorneys. I receive them all the time. I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again. They really don't move me," said Crocamo.

Crocamo is referring to a letter she received last week from a Washington DC-based law firm that represents several democratic party organizations, including the Democratic National Committee.

The letter questioned and challenged her authority to unilaterally decide to not deploy ballot drop boxes, but Crocamo insists, under the county charter, she has that authority.

"I'm just a little ole county lawyer, but I take my job very seriously, of keeping the citizens of Luzerne County safe, and I can't, cannot guarantee the safety and security of the drop boxes from any type of sabotage," Crocamo explained.

The Luzerne County Election Board, which oversees the election bureau, certified the November ballot, but before that action, they met in a private executive session.

The details of the executive sessions, by law, are not made public, but board member Alyssa Fusaro did say there is no change in the status of the drop boxes.

"What I do know is that I personally agree with our county manager's assessment. She did a risk assessment and did the work on this. She truly has the best interest of the voters and people of Luzerne County in mind," Fusaro stated.
