Officials confirm man dead in Pittston Township fire

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man is dead after flames ripped through his mobile home in Luzerne County.

The fire broke out around 6:00 p.m. and hauled in multiple fire and police departments from across two counties.

A man was inside his home at the time the fire broke out.

He was sent to the hospital where he later died.

A neighbor tried helping him out before it was too late.

Fire destroyed this mobile home at 34 Decker Lane in Pittston Township and sent its disabled owner to the hospital where he later died.

"His body was trembling," said Deborah Capwell, a neighbor.

Deborah Capwell lives right across the road in Evergreen Mobile Home Park and was home at the time with her grandkids when the fire started.

She jumped into action before emergency officials arrived on the scene.

"I ran to the door. I just kept throwing myself against the door, kicking the door trying to get the door open, and screaming to him trying to get him to come to my voice," Capwell explained.

Pittston Township Fire Chief Allan Capozucca says CPR was performed on the man before being sent to the hospital.

Close to a dozen different fire departments from both Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties helped battle the fast-moving flames.

"A mobile home fire, they tell you seven to 10 minutes because the whole thing can be destroyed and engulfed. It was set back in the woods and we don't know how long it was going before it came out the structure to be seen," said Chief Capozucca.

Another neighbor who wished to remain anonymous says a loud explosion could be heard before the fire broke out, and says this isn't the first fire that took place in his community.

"This is the third fire since my many years of living here and considering the age of the park, the homes there themselves the infrastructure it's not a good situation," the neighbor said.

Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland released details on the incident saying the man was 52 years old and was taken to GCMC ED where he died shortly after 7:00 p.m.

The name of the man is being held at this time and the fire is under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Wilkes-Barre and Pittston Township Police Department.
