Over a hundred gathered for Run for Katie event

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — What a great day for a walk or run which is what more than 100 people did Saturday for a cause in Scranton.

Runners pounded the pavement at Nay Aug Park for the 5k event called 5Kate.

Many dressed up in Halloween costumes in memory of Katie Shoener who was born on Halloween and loved that holiday.

The race is named in memory of the 29-year-old Scranton woman who lost her life to suicide in 2016 after battling bipolar disorder.

"So this race started nine years ago to get people to be more aware of mental illness, to be a more supportive community and accepting of those who are suffering we want this race to feel like it's a big hug when you come out and that we're all supportive and we're here for you," stated Shoener.

Money raised from today's race will go to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Katie's Place Clubhouse on Penn Avenue in Scranton.
