Hundreds gather to honor coach, fundraise for families in need in Pittston

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Hundreds gathered on Sunday to honor a beloved local coach and raise crucial funds for families in need.

Runners and walkers lined Main Street in Pittston for the first-ever Jeff Yencha Family Fun Festival and 5K.

The event raised much-needed funds to support children and families dealing with cancer.

All proceeds benefit organizations like Allied Services and the John Moses Memorial.

Drop boxes will be allowed in Luzerne County

Jeff Yencha was a dedicated coach and community leader, who passed away earlier this year from pancreatic cancer.

On Sunday, the community transformed his legacy into a lasting cause that provides hope.

"He'd feel great about it, knowing that this many people were out here remembering him and his legacy and what he's done for the community," said Bob Cole, a runner from Duryea and a friend of Jeff.

Organizers say they plan to expand efforts with a fishing derby and basketball tournaments, ensuring Coach Yencha's legacy lives on.
