Man hospitalized after officer-involved shooting in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — One man is in critical condition on Sunday after an officer-involved shooting in Wilkes-Barre.

On Sunday, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) told 28/22 News at about 11:15 a.m., an officer-involved shooting happened on the unit block of Holland Street in Wilkes-Barre.

A 43-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound in the incident and was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center for treatment, according to PSP.

State police say the man who was shot is in critical condition.

No officers were injured in the incident and PSP Troop P and the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office are investigating, troopers say.

State police say this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public.

State police and the District Attorney's office spent Sunday afternoon combing over the scene on the first block of Holland Street.

More than a dozen evidence markers indicate where state police say the gunfire happened involving Wilkes-Barre Police.

Seven people displaced after Hazleton fire

A man who lives a few streets away, and wished to remain anonymous, says he heard the gunfire break out and what sounded like multiple shots.

"Yes, I was sitting on the front porch of my house down on Brown Street like three blocks away and I heard the gunshots. It sounded like a bunch of firecrackers going off. If you light a whole pack of firecrackers and just throw them that's what it sounded like," the neighbor said.

Pieces of clothing near the evidence markers could be seen on the street and holes where bullets pierced a porch post.

"We're investigating every aspect of it. We're doing interviews right now with everyone who is involved or may have been involved so it will be a lengthy, thorough investigation for sure," PSP Public Information Officer Trooper Bill Evans explained.

Now neighbors are left with some unanswered questions.

"Everybody is just trying to figure out who shot him. If there's going to be retaliation or not who knows," the neighbor added.

28/22 News still waiting to learn what led to the shooting.

Officials are expected to release more information Monday afternoon.
