Non-profit unveails new addition to Lackawanna County cemetery

CHINCHILLA, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A non-profit committed to improving and maintaining a local cemetery has unveiled a new addition.

The group Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery dedicated the Clover Memorial Monument on Sunday in Chinchilla.

More than 300 babies and toddlers, who died decades ago, are buried together in an unmarked grave in the cemetery's Clover Section.

Drop boxes will be allowed in Luzerne County

Most of those children had no grave marker so their resting place could not be located.

Organizers say the idea behind the monument is to provide respect and honor to the young lives lost.

"And it's been an over two-year project and it's very exciting to see it completed after all that hard work that we put into it," said Friends of Shady Lane Cemetery Board of Directors member Bill Lester.

Lester also conceived of the Clover Memorial Project which cost more than $5,000.
