Scranton priest found guilty of child sexual assault, dismissed

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Diocese of Scranton announced the dismissal of Martin M. Boylan from the clerical state after being found guilty of sexually assaulting minors.

The diocese stated Boylan’s involuntarily dismissal from the clerical state was issued after he was found guilty under canon law of sexually assaulting two minors.

As a result of an eight-year canonical process, Boylan, 76, is not allowed to exercise priestly ministry in any capacity, no longer celebrate Mass, hear confessions, or administer any of the Church’s sacraments, officials reported.

Back in April 2016, Boylan was removed from priestly ministry following an accusation of the sexual assault of a minor. Then between April 2016 and October 2023, four more accusations of sexual assault involving minors were received, the Diocese of Scranton stated.

Boylan's relationship with the Diocese of Scranton is now permanently ended.
