WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA has collected truckloads of supplies for Hurricane Helene victims in the hard-hit areas of North Carolina.
With Milton on the way, they say they are not slowing down their efforts anytime soon.
The YMCA staff says their first round of collection has been incredibly successful and with the help of our community. They plan to continue to help.
"One of our biggest pillars is strengthening our communities," said Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA Senior Programming Director Megan Welch.
The Greater Wyoming Valley Area YMCA is lending a helping hand to people impacted by Hurricane Helene.
"It might not be our community but it's a community just like ours so it might not be Wilkes-Barre or Pittston, but it's a town just like ours," Welch added.
With the help of the local business, Jr. and Sons Recycling, dozens of emergency supplies will be taken down to North Carolina this week.

Welch says this is just the beginning.
"We're waiting to kind of see what will be needed most after they get that first round donated and then we plan on kind of continuing the cycle and getting more donations as they need," Welch continued.
The Greater Wyoming Valley YMCA also plans to accept donations for people who will be impacted by Hurricane Milton.
"We do anticipate there's probably gonna be another need with Milton and we're more than willing to do that again and to help those that are in need whether it be in North Carolina Florida or wherever," Wilkes-barre YMCA Executive Director Doug Miller said.
The YMCA says they'll be announcing what they need for their next donation drive on their social media pages and they'll also put flyers up inside.
They'll be accepting items again shortly at their Pittston and Wilkes-Barre sites.
