27th Annual Steamtown Marathon stepped off in Scranton

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The 27th Annual Steamtown Marathon stepped off Sunday morning in NEPA.

Runners started their stretch in Forest City at 8:00 a.m., making their way to the finish line at the Lackawanna County Courthouse in Scranton.

Nearly 1,000 people from all over the world came out to participate.

The race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, which will be held in April of next year.

Qualifying times vary by age group.

Despite the rain and wet weather, hundreds of spectators came out to cheer on the runners.

"It's a great atmosphere even just cheering on strangers, people you don't know, it brings people together. it's great," Spectator Amanda Murray said,

"This is a great marathon here at Steamtown. They put on a great event and I look forward to coming back here," said one Runner, Daniel Price.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to St. Joseph's Center in Scranton.
