Helring pension revoked by Scranton Police Pension Board

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The City of Scranton Police Pension Board voted unanimously to revoke the pension of a former police officer convicted of a felony.

48-year-old Paul Helring was sentenced in June after pleading guilty to theft charges.

Officials say from March 2021 to May 2022 Helring was paid to work extra patrol shifts at a lower-income housing complex, but he did not actually work.

In addition to prison time, Helring had to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution.

His attorney Kimberly Borland tells 28/22 News they plan to appeal.

"We disagree with the actions taken by the board this morning we're reviewing all of our options, and we'll act accordingly," stated Borland.

Helring was sentenced to six months in prison, his release date has been set for November 19.
