SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Scranton residents can expect some exciting changes in their local parks and pools, with several major construction projects underway and more to come.
Major park projects are currently taking place in Scranton such as the anticipated complex over at Nay Aug Park
"We are doing the site prep here at Nay Aug for the pool complex and the multi-purpose courts. There are phases of this it's not going to happen all at once but the multi-purpose courts and the first pool are being built now that site prep going on," said Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti.
With site prep looking like it'll wrap up in a few months Mayor Cognetti is hopeful the courts and the first pool will be open next Summer. As for phase two, the city is looking for additional funding
PennDOT announces driverless vehicle approval in Pa.
"We didn't get one of the grants we were hoping for, for the splash pad so we're still putting the pieces - the funding pieces together for those next phases but the first pool and the multi-purpose courts are funded," stated Mayor Cognetti.
A lot of upgrades are coming to Weston Field including a renovated pool.
"If anybody drives by they can see how quickly that pool is going up," noted Mayor Cognetti.
It will also be home to a new skatepark construction it starting in the Spring of next year.
"We're going to take down the playground and put a skatepark there we're very excited to have had a lot of public input into that process and we'll be having a new playground at Weston Field that is closer to the parking lot closer to the field," says Mayor Cognetti.
The construction at Connell Park's pool is finishing up too, looking to be open by the Summer
"We are working hard to try and get everyone swimming at Connell, Weston Field, and Nay Aug in the Summer of 2025," added Mayor Cognetti.
Mayor Cognetti says it's not definite that all three pools will be open by the Summer, but with the way the construction has gone so far this year, it's a hopeful goal.
