SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The City of Scranton sealed the deal with Verizon to provide all residents with universal internet access.
The partnership will develop an all-reaching network of fiber internet access to Scranton homes.
It will allow all city residents to subscribe to high-speed internet and help close the existing digital divide.

The deal also requires Verizon to either participate in the affordable connectivity program or provide a low-cost program for low-income households in Scranton.
"We wanna make sure that everyone in Scranton, every resident, all over our entire city has access to highspeed internet, in this case, fiber, its really important for school, for medicine, for working from home, so many ways in a modern world you gotta have highspeed access and Verizon's going to make sure that that access is ubiquitous here in the city of Scranton," Mayor Paige Cognetti said.
The project is already being done in part of the city and will be fully completed over the next three years.
The cost of this project is all from Verizon so no funding is needed from the city of Scranton.
