Voters, officials prepare for Election Day

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — There are only eight days and counting until election day 2024. State and county election officials say they are on track to ensure a safe, secure, and accurate election process, but questions and concerns remain from voters.

Some of whom may be having issues in their respective county with the election process.

28/22 News hears from voters every day.

One of the biggest concerns we hear over and over again is voter fraud. They want to have confidence in the election process.

In fact, on Monday, 28/22 News helped a Luzerne County voter get some answers regarding her voter registration.

Ask any county election official in northeastern Pennsylvania and they will tell you there are many moving parts to an election.

They say the challenge is and always will be to make sure those moving parts work together to ensure a safe and accurate election.

The I-Team was contacted by Beth, a Luzerne County voter who now lives in Germany.

She feared she had been purged from the voting rolls and could not get any answers from county officials.

28/22 News I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick connected her with Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo.

Beth and Crocamo agree to allow us to record the conversation.

Luzerne County voter registrations dropped off en masse considered valid

"So that's my first question is about the status of my voter registration," Beth asked.

"We checked and you're registered as a federal voter," Crocamo replied.

"That's correct. I just, that, this morning but prior to that?" Beth asked.

"But we have you as a federal voter. My understanding is you would have had to fill out a separate application," Crocamo clarified.

28/22 News also asked Crocamo about voter registration fraud concerns.

This comes after Lancaster County Election Officials on Friday reported they had uncovered about 2,500 voter registration forms that might be fraudulent and that two other counties in the state reported similar concerns.

"I also want everyone to know we have double-checked in our voter registration process. There was no fraud in our voter registration. In tallies, we are very vigilant for that," Crocamo explained.

Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce also tells the I-team that despite social media reports that fraudulent voter registrations were dropped off at the election bureau, none of those ballots were fraudulent and there is no connection to the Lancaster County fraud investigation.

Voters like Dennis Nealon of Nanticoke say they are keeping a close eye on all of this, but say they will vote no matter what.

"Biggest issue is the safety of our country. I want to see us stay out of wars," Nealson said.

District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce confirmed that his office investigated the complaint. The voter registrations were lawfully submitted to the Election Bureau and none were found to be fraudulent. Additionally, this incident did not have any connection to reports of election fraud in Lancaster County.

If voters have questions about the voting process, they should contact their respective county bureau of elections or the Department of State, which oversees the election process in Pennsylvania.
