SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It was a night of remembrance and honor in Lackawanna County on John Mitchell Day.
The Annual John Mitchell Memorial Service was held Tuesday at the Cathedral Cemetery and included prayers and speeches about the life and legacy of Mitchell.
Mitchell led coal miners through a six-week strike fighting for high wages and better working conditions back in 1900.
The strike ended on October 29.

The day was set aside to pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of the labor leader.
"Great family man, good salt of the Earth person, gives back to the community, all the things that makes a person a good person. A good father. Good human being. That's what we're looking for to be our John Mitchell," said AOH Division Four Scranton Charter President Patrick O'Malley.
A man of the year presentation along with a wreath-laying ceremony were also held.
There's a monument dedicated to Mitchell in Scranton's Courthouse Square.
