Turkey Trot Race benefits Scranton families in need

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Families in need will have a happier Thanksgiving thanks to a local organization.

Runners filled the streets of Downtown Scranton this morning for the 15th Annual Turkey Trot Walk and Run.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine hosts the event to help benefit Friends of the Poor.

The Scranton-based non-profit is dedicated to helping people in need with food, clothing, and other assistance.

The race raises funds for Thanksgiving community programs such as a community dinner, and also basket donations for families to have their own Thanksgiving meals in their homes.

"There are a lot of other things that people deserve too, but we're working on the basics right now. So if we can help provide food for our families in the community then that's even better for us as providers because we want to see our patients happy and healthy too," said GCSOM Turkey Trot Committee President and Medical Student Olivia Zehel.

The medical school does not yet have a total for the amount of money raised, but their goal was to get to $50,000.
