Community leaders react to Trump victory

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Local officials and community leaders are reacting Wednesday to former president Trump's victory over Vice-President Kamala Harris.

A new administration brings with it new policies and ideas that could impact their communities.

Local officials tell 28/22 News they always pay close attention to what a presidential candidate has to say and we've heard a lot from both President Trump and Vice-President Harris in recent months.

Now that the campaign is over, they want to hear more about the Trump Administration's plans for the nation and their individual communities.

"I mean you know it's Wednesday, we wake up today, you know, hopefully, if we do the right thing, we're not D's or R's anymore. We're all Americans," said Pittston Mayor Mike Lombardo.

Mayor Lombardo, who is a Democrat, says former president Trump's victory over Vice-President Harris should be the end of the usual campaign speeches and rhetoric and the start of bringing the nation together.

"I want to continue to talk about economic development. The conversations really aren't a lot different on both sides have been mentioning these. So, I really want to hear a plan and how do we get there, and how do we interface with this new administration," Mayor Lombardo explained.

"At this point, I want, the new president-elect to do a very good government, respect everybody," said the Publisher of the El Mensajero Amilcar Arroyo.

Arroyo is the publisher of the Spanish-language newspaper El Mensajero in Hazleton.

The Latino vote was a major factor in the trump victory.

Arroyo talked about what he is hearing from members of the Latino community.

"For the Latino people that voted for him, they are waiting to be protected because one of the main points for the Latinos to vote for Trump was to end all illegal immigration, and the other one was Trump was saying right for life. He's pro-life," Arroyo explained.

But Arroyo says he hopes the once and future president will bring together a divided nation.

"A unified country. Respect for everyone. It doesn't matter the color of your skin or the sexual or religious orientation," Arroyo added.

Other local officials echoed the comments being made by Mayor Lombardo and Arroyo. They just want the nation to come together.
