First responders and veterans appreciation luncheon

DUPONT, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Veterans are getting a heaping helping of appreciation this weekend.

One of those ways is through a luncheon not only for vets but also first responders and another special group of people.

For the past 10 years, the members of the Holy Mother of Sorrows have been showing their gratitude to veterans and first responders in the community with a luncheon.

"I think it's a nice way to give back to people who have done so much for our community. They're always here for us to step up when we have a need and it's our way of repaying them," stated Lois Mchugh the treasurer at Holy Mother of Sorrows.

While this is put on every year to appreciate local heroes, it's also to appreciate the women of the church who volunteer their time to make these beds and blankets out of grocery bags for the unhoused.

"So this dinner is also for them, so those ladies also help us in various events. They attend our fundraising events and even come to services and masses," says Rev. Zbigniew Dawid the Holy Mother of Sorrows.

A veteran 28/22 News spoke with says he's been coming to this luncheon for years.

"I think it's great that the church and all the community take their time to recognize us veterans. I mean we take a great sense of pride in our community and when they get back to us, it's just overwhelming," explained Bernie Mcdonald a veteran.

Tyler Szumski says this is something he would encourage all veterans and first responders to attend.

"It's nice to be recognized like that and they come in and give us some support in with the community," added Szumski.

Holy Mother of Sorrows also hosts other events and gives back to the community in other ways like a Thanksgiving dinner and coat drive.
