Luzerne Council, county officials to not borrow money in 2025 for public projects

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Good news for Luzerne County taxpayers: For the first time in more than 10 years, the county will not be borrowing money for public projects.

Luzerne County officials consider this to be a big win for taxpayers.

"This decision is not just a number on a spreadsheet or balance sheet, it is a testament to our collective commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent financial management," said Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo.

For the first time in years, Luzerne Council and county officials decided not to borrow money in 2025 for a tax revenue anticipation note.

This borrowing for public projects often results in debt.

"By not having to borrow money for the tax revenue anticipation note we will be saving at least $400,000 in interest compared to what we have normally spent in other years to do the borrowing," said Luzerne County Budget and Finance Division Head Mary Roselle.

Also in the works for the budget is a zero percent tax increase.

"With that and the fact that we will save the money on the interest for the borrowing we will be able to maintain the services that we provide to the county and hopefully expand on some," Roselle explained.

The final deadline for the budget is December 15.
