Student-run pop-up bar opens for holiday season

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY — For those struggling to get into the holiday spirit, a new pop-up bar in Lackawanna County will help stir up some excitement.

Holiday vibes are shaken, poured, and served at a new pop-up bar in Scranton.

“We are in misfits,” said Danielle Pilotta, a sophomore at Lackawanna College.

The pop-up named Misfits has taken over 409 on Adams Avenue, Lackawanna College’s student-run restaurant. Now it’s bringing all the holiday cheer to the city through December 21st, but not the traditional kind.

“It’s not your average Christmas. It’s not a lot of Santa Claus’, not a lot of red or greens. Lots of zebra print, a lot of pink, a lot of disco. Very magical.” said Pilotta.

Getting the experience of working in the industry, the students run the operation.

“Some students just like to cook and they’re going to go start as a dishwasher and move their way up. Here, they’ve actually gotten the chance to experience a restaurant in different types of levels and volume,” said Susan Markovich, hospitality manager at Lackawanna College.

Serving more than just drinks, the bar’s food menu is jam-packed with Items like homemade flatbreads and sweet treats like sage chocolate tart and a classic smores dessert.

“Everything has to be precise. If you just measure one thing incorrectly, your recipe is going to come out wrong. So it’s a lot more calm in here, but it’s a lot more focused. In the kitchen, it is crazy, it is very high intense because orders are coming into the kitchen very, very quickly.” said Chef Christa Sapone, pastry coordinator, Lackawanna College.

Handling the heat in the kitchen draws up success that brings thousands to the pop-up with the students benefiting from their hard work.

“The money will go towards our loaner laptop program, we have a food bank that helps fight food insecurity, we have a therapy dog, and most importantly, it goes back to student scholarships to help them continue to do things like this,” said Andrea Desando, special events manager, Lackawanna College.

Lackawanna College’s Misfits pop-up bar opens November 14 at 5 p.m. and runs Wednesdays through Saturdays until December 21.
