Man dies after being hit by car near Home Depot in Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Wilkes-Barre City police confirmed a man has died after being hit by a car Sunday night while he was walking near Home Depot.

The Wilkes-Barre City Police Department reports on Sunday around 6:50 p.m., officers were called to Route 309 for a pedestrian hit by a car near the Home Depot entrance.

Police said the driver was traveling north when he hit a man who was crossing the road towards Norm's Pizza.

Man faces charges after police standoff in Wilkes-Barre

The victim, identified by the Luzerne County Coroner's Office as John Ruppenthal, 54, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m.

The coroner's office said Ruppenthal cause of death was due to multiple traumatic injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
